Entertainment around the world

Have you ever used the popular entertainment site YouTube? If not then you probably have at least heard of it. What you may not know about using sites like YouTube is that not everyone around the world has access to them. When researching how YouTube influences people from places like New England and China, I found there was a big difference.

New Hampshire:

In New Hampshire, and all of America, YouTube is an app available for your phone as well as a site you can find on the internet. YouTube, is one of the most popular social media sites in the United States. Patrick Van Kessel, a senior data scientist at Pew Research Center, says that according to a 2019 survey, ¨Around three-quarters of U.S. adults say they use YouTube.¨

YouTube is available all across the U.S., however, YouTube has personalized ads, based on your location. For example in New Hampshire, I would see ads on YouTube supporting Jeanne Shaheen in her political run in 2020, while people in California would see ads for their state representatives rather than New Hampshire.

YouTube goes even further in targeting individuals based on their search history and viewing content, showing each person ads that they may have a specific interest in.  This is how YouTube is able to influence people living in specific areas like New Hampshire.

China:

YouTube use in China, on the other hand, is the complete opposite of YouTube use in New Hampshire. In China, the government has blocked popular entertainment sites like YouTube, however, this does not stop people in China from using YouTube.  There is a way to get around the firewall. Kate Veale says ¨the easiest way to access YouTube in China is to install a VPN before you arrive.¨ Although she is talking about people traveling to China, it can also be applied to people living in China. Most Chinese choose not to avoid the firewall because of a new site in China similar to YouTube called Youku Tudou. The biggest difference between the two sites is that YouTube is an entertainment platform created in the United States and Youku Tudou was created in China, giving the Chinese a similar platform to view videos, but primarily with Chinese content.  ¨Youku Tudou is one of China's largest online video providers with 23.6 billion monthly active views and nearly 60% of its users under the 30-year age bracket¨. Said in an artical called, Youku Todou in China Similar to YouTube in the west. This means that fewer people in China are watching YouTube vs people in America watching YouTube.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, China has blocked access to YouTube to the general population while other sites like Youku Tudou are available. Because of this, YouTube has less influence on Chinese viewers, unlike its influence on the three-quarters of Americans that enjoy viewing YouTube content regularly at their own will.

  1. I really liked your blog. It was very interesting. I do find it interesting that in china there even allowed to have a site like YouTube. But I'm sure there YouTube is very restricted and the government picks what they want the people to see. I'm sure they can't just look up any video like we can. If you get caught in china with a vpn can you go to jail?

  2. You did a good job of explaining the comparable platforms, as well as, highlighting their similarities and differences. I expected that at least the content of Youtube would have been edited in China but I had no idea it was actually officially banned. What is a VPN and how does it allow you to bypass the firewall? Like many forty-somethings, I am a bit of a technology novice, sorry. Good use of details to support what you had to say.

    1. Thank you, I thought it was crazy that it was banned in China too. A VPN is a virtual private network, that hides your IP adress. An IP adress can be used to locate where you are, and your online actions cant be traced either. By using a VPN people, in this example, China, cannot locate you or trace your activiy, therfor you can use sites like YouTube.

  3. While it seems like there is a big difference in access, since it's clear that China censors much of its media, are there things on Youtube that get censored? If so, what are the reasons?
